Laser vs Lamp Projectors!

A look at new projector technology, and the pros and cons of laser projectors!

Laser projectors are forecasted by many in the industry to be the future of high resolution imaging! Their advertisements promise enormous long lives of up to 30,000 hours, and once you add up all the lamps you won’t have to be replacing, huge savings! The technology is definitely cool, but is laser the way to go? A look of sale trends would point one towards that conclusion, but there are some important factors to take into consideration.

The Pros

  • Not having to replace bulbs! A definite Pro! Teachers won’t have to worry about their lesson’s being effectively ended by a lamp going bad.
  • Almost instant turn on and off! You won’t have to wait for your projector’s lamp to cool off.
  • Better power efficiency. By only making the colors needed, laser projectors don’t waste excess light. (lamp projectors split white light to make red, green, and blue)
  • They can be brighter, and offer higher contrast!
  • They have a much longer lifespan!

The Cons

  • The price point
  • Untested technology. Most projectors aren’t old enough to confirm their long life claim, and the earliest ones are showing signs of wear
  • Loss of brightness. The day you buy your Laser Projector is the brightest it will ever be. Its brightness fades over time. Where with a lamp projector you can just replace the lamp and regain that original brightness.
